I was at that Coffee Talk and it was incredibly inspiring. I also appreciated the conversation around homework. I recommend all mentors attend a coffee talk.

Texting, as with other technology is embedded in not just teen culture, but in the adult world as well. I have advocated in my book, as well as in my clinical practice, for parents and professionals who work with teens to join them in their world of communication. That is, if you adopt an "if you can't beat 'em . . . join 'em" attitude, you will be able to reach kids in a way that they will be receptive to hearing what you have to say. Sometimes, texting them instead of face to face communication is the way for them to really "hear" what you have to say. Recent studies indicate that 23% of teens feel more comofrtable discussing sensitive topics such as sex and drugs with their parents via texting. Of course, this would not be my first communication venue choice but it is certainly better than not having the conversation at all.
